Acknowledging the hard work and efforts of those around you isn’t a new concept – it’s an age-old way of showing appreciation. In the workplace, fostering a culture of recognition is critical to retention and happiness.

Employees who don’t feel valued will leave to find a company that does. In fact, recent research shows that employees who are recognized are almost six times more likely to stay at their jobs than those who aren’t. Wanting to feel appreciated is basic human psychology and true of any relationship. Employee recognition is powerful and the right strategies can help you inspire and motivate your team.

Sometimes, though, you need just the right words to say. Here are some impactful examples of employee recognition statements for when you want to celebrate employee achievements, acknowledge outstanding performance or simply say thank you.

Why Leaders Need to Recognize Employees

People are the backbone of any organization. The importance of recognizing individual and team contributions can’t be overstated. Not doing so can make an employee feel undervalued, not appreciated or like their work simply doesn’t matter.

A demoralized employee isn’t set up for success. Unhappiness can seep through the organization, creating a toxic environment where work goes unrecognized and efforts aren’t rewarded.

When leaders recognize and verbalize their appreciation for the hard work and dedication of their teams, everyone wins. It creates a positive work environment, acts as a motivational booster and helps individuals feel like they are part of something bigger.

Make sure to mark moments like:

  • Exceptional teamwork demonstrated by employees
  • Creativity and initiative recognized in project execution
  • Leadership skills demonstrated during challenging projects
  • Customer service excellence highlighted through positive feedback
  • Don’t just notice contributions. Celebrate them.

Examples of Statements Using:

Handwritten Thank You Notes

When was the last time you received a handwritten note? In today’s digital world, a physical message can be rare. But putting pen to paper is powerful.

Taking the time to write a note feels more heartfelt – it’s something tangible. Leave it on an employee’s desk or mail it to their home to brighten their day and make them feel valued.

For example, write:

Personalized Emails or Messages

An email or other form of digital communication is a quick way to reach out to someone, making it easy to build recognition into the day-to-day.

Take it up a notch by saying something like:

  • “Congratulations on [XX] years with our company! Your dedication and hard work over the years are invaluable, you help shape our success each and every day. Thank you for being an integral part of our team. Here’s to many more achievements to come!”
  • “Happy birthday, [Employee’s Name]! Your positive energy and enthusiastic dedication are an inspiration to us all. As a team, we are all so thankful for the impact you make every day.”
  • Your recent [Project/Presentation/Achievement] was outstanding. Thank you, [Employee Name], your leadership and innovation were evident throughout and you left a lasting impression. Thank you. 

Shout-Outs In Team Meetings

Public recognition can have a rousing impact. Giving a shout-out during a team meeting not only applauds the accomplishment but showcases the success to the employee’s peers.

Keep in mind that some employees may feel uncomfortable or put on the spot with public recognition, while others will thrive on it. Get a feel for what your employees prefer by asking or with shout-outs in smaller, more casual events like a team meeting rather than a company-wide gathering.

Consider saying things like:

  • “I’d like to acknowledge the exceptional work [Employee’s Name] did on [Recent Project]. Your creativity and leadership helped overcome some challenging problems we had been facing.”
  • “As part of our weekly kudos during this meeting, I’d like to highlight [Employee’s Name]’s willingness to help and positive attitude recently. We all appreciate it!”
  • “A big shout-out to [Employee’s Name] for their flexibility and problem-solving with [Example]. It helped save us a lot of time and effort!”

Social Media Acknowledgments

Some accomplishments simply require more widespread recognition.

Sharing a message on a platform like the company’s social media account or through an internal social communications platform is an immediate confidence booster. It also helps to show the company’s commitment to employee success.

One classic, yet especially effective way to approach social media acknowledgments is through a regular “Employee of the Month” recognition for exceptional contributions.

Consider sharing a post that says something like:

  • "Thrilled to highlight [Employee's Name] for their remarkable dedication to our company's values. Your passion for excellence sets an example for us all. #EmployeeSpotlight"
  • "Today, we're shining a spotlight on [Employee's Name] for their outstanding contributions to our team. Your commitment to excellence is truly inspiring
  • “Join us in celebrating [Employee's Name] for their impressive achievements with [Project]. Your hard work embodies the spirit of our organization's mission."

These are just some examples of recognition statements and a starting point when you are stuck on what to say. The key is to make sure your message is genuine, specific, and tailored to the individual’s specific contributions.
